a glimpse towards Sunday 10.4.13

I was in court this morning for a relative.   This hard-but-childish young man will turn eighteen in eleven days.  He has taken the juvenile system to the brink.  As family lined the observer seats and the black-robed judged walked in, I began wondering how things got so broken.  How did we get here? A young man not yet eighteen was sitting in ankle and wrist shackles.  This didn’t feel so juvenile.  The judge’s poignant words were certainly not juvenile-esque.  The…

I never understood why my dad wore a flat top haircut.  I still don’t fully understand how barbers made those things of wonder happen.   I also wondered why adults back in the 70’s were all about keeping up with the Jones at various levels.  Spanking certainly was a hard concept for me to understand as the 60’s paved the way into my teenage years.  Fidgeting in church was always frowned upon by my parents.  Why?  What harm could a little…

In so many ways and in at so many levels, I’m still processing through last Sunday.  How about you?  Tom McGuinness’ story blew anyone and everyone away at our CCC gathering last week.  You can click here to watch the entire service, again.  You can click here to watch just Tom’s video story, again.  Amazing.  Hard.  Challenging.  Yea, God. As a dad, I’m incredibly challenged to make sure I’m passing down a legacy of faith that is sure of what…

Hebrews chapter eleven, verse one, should be as touted, memorized, and heralded as a John 3:16, Matthew 6:33, or Romans 12:1. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see.” How much faith do you have?  What are you so sure of that hope abounds?  What certainties beyond your eyesight are in absolute focus? This Sunday will such a very special day at CCC.  We’ve been calling it “Back To Church…

Sherry makes up a mean batch of barbecue cups.  Golden, flakey, pie crust molded into single cup servings with BBQ and cheese.  Oh man, there are never leftovers when the ole BBQ cups hit the Scott dinner table. In fact, Michael has a hoarding type strategy when it comes to this dinner table delight.  He’ll load up his plate with 2-3 BBQ cups, and if threatened by looming sisters, he’ll lick each one to claim absolute and unquestionable ownership.  Even…

I got my braces off in 2006 just before moving back to Atlanta.  I had spit and sputtered on people in Colorado as I did my preaching, and had hoped to avoid the same shhhpecial pitfall in Georgia. With my braces off, it felt wonderful to speak without spitting.  Eating chewy, gooey food never tasted as good as it did with my braces forever removed from my face.  My teeth were aligned, and therefore my life. The last thing my…

I remember when mobile phone devices were first introduced.  My father-in-law owned the first one I’d locked eyes on.  It came in a big, black bag.  He stuck an antenna on his van, plugged in a quirky coax cable, and an emerging world of convenience had begun.  A new world of convenience beyond Mr. Coffee was dawning. Those beginning pangs of tech and convenience paved the way for the flood of cell phones seen at any concert, baseball game, or…

Some of the seemingly great people from my high school days never actually seemed as great after high school as they did when we were in high school.  Did you follow that?  When was the last time you actually went to your alma mater’s alumni banquet and saw familiar faces and what they ultimately became?  Chuck was a nuisance on the cross-country course, but now is a great thinker, writer, and music connoisseur.  Kimberly seemed out of touch with reality…

Duck Dynasty has taken over our household.  I’m now thinking of growing a beard down to my knees.  Michael wants to too. If you haven’t watched the A&E hit cable TV show, you don’t know what you’re missing.  When I first heard about Duck Dynasty, my suburban cynicism wouldn’t give it the time of day.  On study break, my family decided to check out first hand what the hillbilly hype was all about.   Now we’re hooked. In fact, I’m in…

My kitchen faucet went south on me.  The top of the faucet broke.  It came apart and fell completely off.  How does THAT happen?  Thanks to Price Pfister’s lifetime warranty, I got a brand new faucet… complete with instructions for installation. Armed with said instructions, tools, my new faucet, and good friend, Stephen Hulsey… I set out to make Sherry proud and fix the kitchen faucet.  She’d been waiting.  (sigh) By all indications, printed and otherwise, this was an hour’s…
