a glimpse towards Sunday 8.23.13

I remember when mobile phone devices were first introduced.  My father-in-law owned the first one I’d locked eyes on.  It came in a big, black bag.  He stuck an antenna on his van, plugged in a quirky coax cable, and an emerging world of convenience had begun.  A new world of convenience beyond Mr. Coffee was dawning. Those beginning pangs of tech and convenience paved the way for the flood of cell phones seen at any concert, baseball game, or…

Some of the seemingly great people from my high school days never actually seemed as great after high school as they did when we were in high school.  Did you follow that?  When was the last time you actually went to your alma mater’s alumni banquet and saw familiar faces and what they ultimately became?  Chuck was a nuisance on the cross-country course, but now is a great thinker, writer, and music connoisseur.  Kimberly seemed out of touch with reality…

Duck Dynasty has taken over our household.  I’m now thinking of growing a beard down to my knees.  Michael wants to too. If you haven’t watched the A&E hit cable TV show, you don’t know what you’re missing.  When I first heard about Duck Dynasty, my suburban cynicism wouldn’t give it the time of day.  On study break, my family decided to check out first hand what the hillbilly hype was all about.   Now we’re hooked. In fact, I’m in…

My kitchen faucet went south on me.  The top of the faucet broke.  It came apart and fell completely off.  How does THAT happen?  Thanks to Price Pfister’s lifetime warranty, I got a brand new faucet… complete with instructions for installation. Armed with said instructions, tools, my new faucet, and good friend, Stephen Hulsey… I set out to make Sherry proud and fix the kitchen faucet.  She’d been waiting.  (sigh) By all indications, printed and otherwise, this was an hour’s…

My son likes to go busking.  Don’t worry if you don’t know what that is.  It’s not naked street dancing.  It IS street musicianship.  Michael likes to play his guitar whenever and wherever, but especially on a street corner where people can walk by and fling dollar bills into his guitar case. I told Sherry how our son is never going to want to really work.  Every time he goes busking, he rakes in about $40 for an hour of…

It happens every year, and every year it yanks my inner chain.  It’s happened for years and years, so I guess it’ll never really stop.  I’m certain no harm is meant, but nonetheless… it is what is it. What is it?  In short it’s this quaint little quip, “How was your vacation?”  Sometimes I’ll take the time to explain about my study break.  You know … I’ll paint a martyr’s picture of studying eight hours a day, thinking, writing, and…

I Love The Church!

By Alan Scott / July 14, 2013 /

I love the church.  I love the organic expression of Jesus on earth through his wonderful bride.  I love being a part of the body.  I love both the gathered and scattered forms of church.  I love leading.  I love that Jesus is the head. I love my home church in Waynesville, Ohio and the heritage she instilled.  I love the miracle God did in a cornfield church in Washington, Indiana where people are still called Christians at Antioch. I…

Handmade Sky Jewelry

On study break, my internal alarm clock goes off around 6 a.m.  I do a quick brushing of the ole enamels,  pull on my shorts I wore yesterday, cover over bed head with a cap, arm myself with necessary coffee, and head towards the beach.  I’m slouched in my chair by 6:15 or so.  Sunrise is around 6:45.  I love it. I’ve driven my entire family nine hours south for the exceptional opportunity to sit, think, read, write, pray, worship……

Ever watch “Gold Rush” on Discovery Channel?  I’ve watched a few times.  It seems insane. It seems there is nothing that the Hoffmans, Schnabels, and Dakota Boys won’t do in their search for gold. Did you know California is a state largely because of the Gold Rush?  Fortune seekers, called 49ers because most arrived in 1849, accounted for the largest migration in American history. While some became rich because they struck gold, simply supporting the chaos made others rich., i.e.…

Carnival Ducks

By Alan Scott / July 10, 2013 /

It was their last day on the beach, so Steve and Donna were going to do this day with some intensity.  I think everyone’s last day of holiday is like this.  Steve had placed his beach chair next to mine for several mornings running.  He likes to fish, and always spoke before throwing his line out in the water.  Eventually Steve brought his engaging wife over to chat, and we had exchanged some pleasant, if not obligatory, conversation.  Up until…
