JESUS IS NOT ENOUGH

I don’t think I would ever want to deliberately lie to God, so perhaps I couch my deception in the songs I sing. What about you?

A.W. Tozer once wrote, “Christians don’t tell lies; they just go to church and sing them.”

Back in 2002, the church began singing another of Chris Tomlin’s big songs, “Enough.”

“All of you is more than enough for all of me
For every thirst and every need
You satisfy me with Your love
And all I have in You is more than enough
You are my supply
My breath of life
And still more awesome than I know
You are my reward
worth living for
And still more awesome than I know.”

If these lyrics were true in my life, there would be less boredom, more Word, increasingly fervent prayer, and passion through giving my life away. I’d bet you would be about the same. But we settle for singing a lie.

What keeps us from thinking Jesus is enough? I fear it’s our stuff. We’ve got a lot of it. In fact, our ever-increasing square footage is not enough, so we rent storage units for all of our stuff. Every Christmas I see more stuff coming into my house than going out. At some point, the math and the damage to my soul don’t work.

Interestingly, my friends in Kenya have so little, but they have so much Jesus. I have so much, and Jesus is not enough. How do I quit lying through my singing?

On Sunday, we’ll be closing out our Joshua series called “MVMNT.” God indeed has been creating movement in our lives and church through the book of Joshua. To finish things up, we’ll be considering Joshua 13:1-7. It’s an inheritance thing. It’s what will shake and wake us up. It’s what will get us to the end of the stuff and to discovery that Jesus is enough.

At the end of our stuff, Jesus is enough.
