about this weekend…

May 18, 2012 Have you ever seen a dramatic re-enactment of the ascension? You know what I’m talking about, right? When Jesus floated up to heaven 40 days after His resurrection, they had to find an appropriate label for an incredibly strange sight. Seems “The Ascension” has stuck. I’ve witnessed grown men in heavy make-up and questionable beards hoisted into the air with groin challenging harnesses and hardly hidden cables. The whiz of the winch lifting “Jesus” into the curtains…

One Last Study Break Blog

By Alan Scott / June 17, 2011 /

We didn’t “Face Our Fears” last night.  The lack of enthusiasm was disguised as sleepiness, but I know better.  I’m told we’ll face our fears tonight, with this being our last available night to do so. Who knew intentional displacement was so hard?  Sherry would even attach  words like suffering and death as her children and husband plunge their tenderized, baked bodies into a dark ocean where sharks and giant squids have caught wind of our aspirations.  All I can…

Intentional Displacement

By Alan Scott / June 16, 2011 /

I think they call it intentional displacement.  Seems like I read about this somewhere recently.  Getting out of your comfortable life rut, and displacing yourself into a circumstance where something is bound to happen is the goal.  We did it last night, and we’ll do it again tonight. Our annual midnight breakfast was last night.  At 12:20 a.m. the Scott family was ordering from a Denny’s menu.  We’ve always had so much fun with these.  Last night was no exception…

The Joys (and not so much) Of Underwater Photography

By Alan Scott / June 15, 2011 /

Any new and brilliant idea is met with resistance.  Innovators make up a piddly 2.5% of the population, while strong resistors make up about 50%.  Such was my burden in attempting a new and different kind of family photograph to grace our Christmas card this year.  I like to capture our annual photo during study break.  This year I wanted an underwater portrait.  When’s the last time you’ve seen one of those come through your holiday mail?   An underwater…

Integrated Spirituality

By Alan Scott / June 14, 2011 /

I’ve been wondering why God has made this unique connection between Lucy and me during study breaks.  For the past several years, a vaguely familiar beach walker has become a good friend.  Why have I connected more and more with this 86-year-old beach dweller from Clarksville, TN?  Why do we talk about everything under the sun for about three miles each morning?  What’s the purpose of this? This morning Lucy seemed to stop and talk more than usual.  Maybe it…

I Think I Saw A Jumping Manta Ray!

By Alan Scott / June 13, 2011 /

I walked the beach very early this morning and saw something I have never seen before.  Bursting out of the still ocean water was a huge, grey and white Manta Ray.  It jumped fully out of the water for a brief couple seconds, and then disappeared.  I took this as a God-gem designed only for my soul.  This day, I began thinking, would bring something new to my heart and thoughts about the church. The newness and smile of…

A Corona And Lime Day…

By Alan Scott / June 12, 2011 /

During study break, we find Saturday night church services so that our Sunday mornings can be an even extra special refreshing time for Sherry and me.  Last night’s church service has left me with a dull headache this morning.  Maybe I’m a church snob.  Cumberland has refreshed, healed, and spoiled me. During our loosely defined “church service” and the slow passing of an hour and a half, there was still no sermon.  It was at this point we were…

The A-Ha Of Ice Cream & Glory

By Alan Scott / June 10, 2011 /

We finally succumbed to the hedonistic ways of the heathen island dwellers.  We gave in, and I must say it was marvelous.  The experience was dripping with delight, while a handful of bashful onlookers could only blush with envy.  I still display a devilish smile just thinking about it. We shamelessly bowed at the shrine of Big Olaf.   For my family, Big Olaf’s ice cream shop is worth the nine hour drive for it’s special brand of decadence.  In…

Just Opposite Of The Mansion

By Alan Scott / June 9, 2011 /

There is a wisdom from God that I pursue.  Many don’t understand it, but still I try.  God’s wisdom is counter-everything.  The more I try to understand it, the more I realize my thinking is just different from my Creator’s.  That’s an incredibly good thing for all of us.  According to James, this heavenly wisdom is given to me in pure, impartial, considerate, sincere, submissive, peace-loving ways — and allows me the opportunity to have a wisdom that operates likewise.…
