BACKGROUND MUSIC

Jesus loves me, this I know.

But this knowledge is mind blowing, isn’t it?  Jesus love ME!  He came down for me?  Jesus is personable and calls me by name.  He created me and chooses me and adopts me.  This is far too lofty for me to fathom.

This I know.

Does this blow me away or is the love of Jesus mere background music?

Chick-Fil-A has background music.  Have you ever listened to it?  It’s just supposed to serenade folks while downing nuggets and waffle fries.  Does anyone actually listen to the background music at Chick-Fil-A?  Could it be targeting unsuspecting customers with subliminal messages to buy more grilled chicken because grilled chicken sales are down?

I’ve actually listened to the background music at Chick-Fil-A.   It’s the music from the current hit Christian songs.  It’s the music, minus the vocals, of all the songs we hear played on 104.7 The Fish —“Safe for the whole family” — except if you’re eating at Chick-Fil-A and don’t like grilled nuggets!  J

Nobody listens to the background music.  It’s white noise.  Oh, you know it’s there, but you’re not excited about it.  You’re not clamoring for more.  You don’t request a certain background music song to be played again.

Jesus loves me, this I know.  Background music or the soundtrack of my life?  Does this love we say we know cause apprehensive obedience or blown away singing?

On Sunday, we’ll be continuing our Christmas series “Spend Less 2 Give More… LOVE.”  Our text is the Magnificat.  Mary’s song.  Luke 1:46-55.

Mary’s song is all about the Love of God.  Mary moves from an apprehensive obedience to a blown away posture of worship focused on the incredible love of God.

I’m excited to teach and practically apply the love of Jesus to our lives.  In a season where giving gifts stresses us and our bank accounts out, what if we gave ourselves away in acts of love?  Jesus didn’t give us gifts.  He gave us himself.  Jesus loves me, this I know.

Here’s a thought:  Let’s spend less and give more of ourselves away.  Let’s wrap less and love more.  Think this would make room for a better or worse Christmas?

I sure hope to see you this cold Sunday at 9 & 11 a.m.  We’ll have a police officer out on Spring Road to help us with construction and frustratingly short traffic lights.

Blessings &  Merry Christmas!
