WORD UP

Words are critical. Words speak. Rachel Wolchin wrote these penetrating words: “Be mindful when it comes to your words. A string of some that don’t mean much to you, may stick with someone else for a lifetime.”

I was a part of a generation who coined the ground-breaking phrase, “Word Up!” When something outstanding was said, and we wholeheartedly agreed, we’d swag our intonation and blurt, “Word up.” Eventually, a much cooler, hip hop crowd distanced themselves from nerdier types by shortening the phrase to just “word.” A fledgling Christian rap band called DC Talk came out with a song called “Word To The Father. That’s when the whole “word up… word” thing faded, thankfully, into pop oblivion.

Words can be quickly said but not too soon forgotten. The Bible attaches grand metaphors to our words. An untamed animal, a ship’s rudder, and a fire indicate how God views the power of our words.

On Easter Sunday, we’ll be considering some iconic Biblical words from John 1:14. Like “I have a dream,” or “That’s one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind,” or “Word up,” the words we’ll be challenged with on Resurrection Sunday should stick with us like good biscuits and gravy.

“THE. WORD. BECAME. FLESH. AND MADE. HIS DWELLING. AMONG US.”

Each word has depth and color and points to the excellent resurrection work of Jesus. That activity of Jesus helps us to REST from our incessant activity.

I’m excited for us to know this phrase from John 1:14. I’m more excited for us to know better the Jesus who makes this epic phrase living and active for all.

On Sunday, we’ll be celebrating a living Jesus. After Friday’s 7 p.m. lament of what we caused on Good Friday, we will gather to celebrate the work Jesus did on a Sunday. What a contrast. What a Savior.

You should get dressed up for this one. Word up. You should most definitely invite a friend. Word.

We’ll also be calling people to Jesus. Pray that many will be drawn by Jesus to salvation. We’ll also be offering Easter baptism to those who want to bury their lives in Christ.

I’m excited to gather and celebrate with you at 9 & 11 a.m. this Resurrection Sunday.

Blessings,
